Interview With Syndel by Cary A very thoughtful interview with the lovely Fetish Model Syndel. How did you become interested in fetish/BDSM? Honestly, there didn't use to be a lot of cross over between the Gothic and fetish cultures, while it's true that fashions were very similar, the mindset tended to be exceptionally different. However, that began to change after the New York style club scene began to bleed over into other cities. In New York, it was very avant garde, anything goes type attitude. That really appealed to me personally, while I enjoy the gothic and vampire scenes, I think that the emerging fetish culture really tied many different subcultures together in a very erotic and fun way. For me, fetish was more than a style, it was really a lifestyle, even if certain things were only known to myself. It's the interpretation of sexuality in subtle and not so subtle ways. It was an evolution of sorts and I think you'll find that happens with most individuals. What shapes a fetish is different for everyone, so really, it was a culmination of events, scenes, and fashion that molded me into what I am today. However the dominate side of me is something I was born with. I've always been quite controlling, and forever craving attention.
Do you enjoy fetishism/BDSM play in your personal life, and if so what are you into? Absolutely! It's a constant cat and mouse game. I'm more into psychological aspects of it. I love to dominate mentally and physically. With that said, it doesn't mean that domination and cruelty go absolutely hand in hand. Domination can be the ultimate expression of love. I also really enjoy vinyl and costume play. I think it's important for people to experience themselves as others, or at the very least to give portions of their psyche complete control and if costumes or dressing up can allow that to happen, I think that it's a wonderful erotic experience. I find that riding crops, flogs, and whips are exciting. They are very archetypal in many respects. These items can be used as an extension of your personality as a dominatrix and when used appropriately are an excellent addition to verbal and other physical loving tortures.
Are there any fetishes that you don't find appealing? There are many that do not personally appeal to me. However, I try to understand and most times accomplish that understanding of why a certain act or role would appeal to someone. For example, Infantilism & Brown/Golden Showers are not things I would be into at all, but I understand how some people would find them appealing. It all goes back to the psychology of fetish. How do things that aren't explicitly sexual, become linked to sexuality in the mind and soul? That's a really alluring aspect of all fetish culture. I have the up most respect for anyone willing to share their fetishes and fantasies with me, some just interest me more than others.
What excites you about fetish modeling? I would be lying if I said I didn't like to be the center of attention, and as a dominating person, that's a big part of it, but that's not really the main reason. I love being in control! Another thing that excites me is that through photographs and videos you can relay that sexual energy to people anywhere at anytime. Being into vampirism there's a huge outlet of energy that is released into the world by the fetish culture and is devoured by those fortunate enough to grasp it. It's exciting to think that someone I don't know is satiating their desires or living their fantasies vicariously through images of me. Another huge aspect of the process is getting to meet so many exciting and intriguing people. Working with them, getting to know them and the things they are into. That's a big draw for me. A fetish photo shoot can be an event full of energy and sexuality, it's like this erotic electricity in the air, a palpable and esoteric thing, but still tangible and accessible. That's when real magic happens and I find that beyond exciting. Titillating even.
What are your favorite types of outfits to model in? For the sake of time and space constraints (I have two walk in closets) I'll try and keep this as brief as possible. I am particularly fond of black vinyl, that can include corsets, skirts, dresses, catsuits, boots, gloves, etc. etc. I also like colored vinyl, rubber, and plastic clothing. The burgeoning cyber fetish culture appeals to me. I love thigh highs, fishnets, stockings, garters, gloves and other feminine accessories. Of course another thing I love are the dreads and hair extensions, I find them to be very empowering when creating a look for an event. I am also a shoe freak, I have so many shoes and boots. I like to incorporate urban and mainstream style elements into my looks. I like to be complex without appearing complex.
What are your least favorites? For me, there are a lot of tired cliché looks out there, I'm not a big fan of the costume right out of the bag look. Really, any unoriginal style or people who rip off original artist, because many of my contemporaries are truly artist creating their own looks.
Do you think pinup and fetish are becoming part of the mainstream culture? Are they becoming part of the mainstream culture? I think that because of the availability of camera and photographic equipment, and the opportunities for amateurs and novices to interact with professionals that it might appear that way. I think that a lot of our cultures looks have been lifted and stolen and taken out of the context they mean for us. A lot of individuals play dress up today. There is a stark contrast between someone with a corset fetish who loves that delicious constriction from the tightening of a custom made corset and someone who puts on an ill fitting size medium from a mainstream lingerie shop. There is a massive difference in consciousness between the women who becomes a shine slave because she lives for the love and attention that serving her master will give and a person with low self esteem who stumbled in and is seeking any attention they can get because they have an emptiness within themselves. Look, fetish, no matter what role or what fetish, is designed to empower the individual, even a slave isn't a slave in the traditional mainstream way. The slave lives for the Masters or Mistresses affection and love, their obedience gives them power, when they disobey, their punishment gives them ecstasy, which in turn gives them power. Master/Slave is a two way street. I am positively certain in my assertion that mainstream society could not and cannot understand even the beginning of such a wonderful and glorious relationship.
What kind of music do you like? I'm pretty much schizophrenic when it comes to music. It totally depends on my mood. There is a lot of ground to cover here, and I feel it's an important piece in the ambiance of a setting, whether for play, working out, or doing a shoot, I really like energy and music is a transmitter of energy, a mind in tune with that can really heighten sexual or fetish experiences with the right soundtrack. I'm into; Industrial, Punk, Goth, Rock, Classic Rock, Reggae, Glam, 80's, Electroclash, mixed with a little Metal & a chunk of Rap. If you were to look my MP3 player right now you'd taste; The Misfits, Dropkick Murphys, Rasputina ,Beastie Boys, WU Tang, Fischerspooner, The Streets, Violent Femmes, D.O.T., Sister Machine Gun, Front 242, Bile, KMFDM, and many others.
What do you like to do for fun? I like to shop with my friends at weird places like flea markets and little curious stores. I really enjoy theme parks! Especially ones you can drink at! I love horror movies & theater. Attending fetish conventions and events. Not the standard club fare, but something really special when people who are there for the right reasons all come together as a community. Of course modeling and I also really enjoy being on the other side of the camera and taking pictures and working on them. I take pictures of EVERYTHING! And MAKE-UP, I love everything about it! I like trashy television shows like Nip/Tuck. I'm always hanging out with friends & making plans. I have a bunch of side projects I'm constantly playing with. I love little adventures that end with amazing souvenirs. Spending as much time possible with my family, including my two cats & my dog. I have the most fun being around and working with like minded individuals, sharing ideas, stories, and enjoying one another's company.
