Interview With Red Sky Photography
The Sky Is The Limit: Red Sky Photography
by Cary
What inspired you to pick up a camera?
My first camera was a high school graduation present from my father, a journalist with the New York Journal of Commerce.
What particular challenges do you face with erotic photography as opposed to other genres?
I don’t really shoot much of what I’d call erotic. Topless glamour/fetish is generally my limit. I like to have some mystery in the final picture.
Do you prefer to shoot with film or digital?
I learned on film, and didn’t give it up until the Nikon D1 came out in 2000. Although it was pretty low resolution, at last I could use all my older Nikon lenses. Eventually bought a D70 and now shoot mostly with a D200.
How did you become interested in fetish/BDSM?
I had only been shooting models for about six months when a friend gave me a black latex mini dress that she no longer wanted. I had arranged a shoot with a local model who was relatively new at the time. We shot some images of her in a Hello Kitty t shirt, and I asked if she wanted to try the dress on. She was only 17, but Mosh looked so fantastic that I knew I wanted to continue on the latex path. I shot with her several times, in different designer’s wardrobe.
Then I found HMS Latex on Etsy as a latex designer specializing in more fashion than costumes. I think Mosh and I were here first American customers for her cute mits. Now I have a good collection of her designs.
I love introducing latex to models who haven’t any experience with it. Nicole Moser is a dear friend who liked wearing my wardrobe so much that she has a great collection of her own now. I’ve been so lucky to have worked with some fabulous models who also share an interest in latex.
Sharon TK, Stephy C, Victoria Vertuga, Jade Vixen, Nicotine, Paper Doll Princess, Carrie Carlin, Mayte and Sylvia have all been wonderful to style and shoot.
Do you enjoy fetishism/BDSM play in your personal life, and if so what are you into?
I like to style most of my shoots myself, so I have an interest in latex, corsets, high heels and stockings.
I enjoy watching more than participation, at my age I’m as old as some of my model’s grandfathers. I loved shooting at Nicotine’s Capitol Punishment Fetish Ball in DC two years ago. I hope to attend Montreal Fetish Weekend this year and someday to make it to The German Fetish Ball.
Do you think pinup and fetish are becoming part of the mainstream culture?
Definitely. There are many new latex designers, and it’s a beautiful look. Pinup is also on the rise, with many trying to put a new spin on the images from the 40s and 50s.
Are there any other creative mediums you work in?
I like to experiment in the kitchen, I’m a pretty good baker but not much of a chef.
What kind of music do you like?
I like most music, except opera, but can’t play any instruments and my singing is only in the shower. My favorites are from the 50s and 60s.
What do you like to do for fun?
I ride a bicycle, used to race when I was younger, garden, sail and motorcycle riding. Looking forward to more travel when I retire.
