Interview With Ashley Riot
Cosplay Mania With Ashley Riot
How did you get interested in Anime/Comics?
I've been into anime since around elementary school, when I began watching Sailor Moon. I would get teased a lot in school for my hobby, and when I heard about a place where I could go where other people liked anime I was so psyched! I saw a flyer for Megacon back in 2000 and begged my parents to let me go. I had one of the best weekends, and vowed to go to as many cons as I could. I met most of my friends through conventions.
How did that interest develop into cosplay modeling?
I think I'm the same as most cosplayers; I always loved dress up and I saw other people doing it at my first con. When I saw people dressed up at Megacon, I wanted to try it so bad. I made my first costume later that year for Jacon. Then it just developed into trying to craft better and better costumes.
How does cosplay differ from other forms of modeling?
It's a huge difference, most modeling requires the model to know posing and fashion. But most cosplaying is about learning to make the costumes as well. For me at least, half the fun is learning how to sew a new pattern or a new sculpting technique. On top of that, trying to bring the character to life is a big part. Coming up with locations and poses that would reflect the character instead of just looking interesting.
Who is your favorite character to dress as?
For me, creating a costume is a big investment of time and money. I don't make a costume unless I'm a very big fan of the character, design, and series. So I love dressing up as everything I do! But my current favorite would have to be Bayonetta. It's my favorite game and I've loved the character since I first laid eyes upon the design. I love the attitude and combination of sexiness and badass. Plus, guns on the shoes. How awesome is that?
You also appear and perform at a lot of conventions, what keeps you coming back to them?
I enjoy going to conventions, they're my get away from the real world. It's the only place I can wear my elaborate creations without people staring. Instead there's cheering and photo taking.
Do you come from a background of formal training in the arts?
No one in my family is really concerned with the arts aside from myself. I've loved painting and drawing since always. In the real world I'm an Illustrator with a degree in animation.
Are there any other creative mediums you work in?
My home everyday is Photoshop or Maya, but when I have time I also enjoy painting with acrylics & Oils. As much as I do enjoy sewing and modeling, my true love is drawing.
What kind of music do you like?
Mostly Alternative Rock, House, and Trip-Hop. I'm really into bands like Radiohead, Daft Punk and the Gorillaz. If it's colorful and has a good beat I probably like it.
What do you like to do for fun?
Video Games. I play anything and everything sans sports games. I am a huge gamer and I play and collect more games than is probably good for me. I own just about every console from NES to PS3. At my grandparents I also have a Colecovision, Atari 2600, and a Virtual Boy. Aside from playing games I watch a few T.V shows. I love Dr. House M.D. mmmmmmm I really a huge recluse who'd rather stay in with a good book or show than a night on the town.
