What inspired you to pick up a camera?
Well first off, I'm a huge metal head and when I was younger a lot of the European bands that I listened to rarely toured the U.S. So I always brought a little point and shoot film camera with me to the shows, kind of like a way for me to prove that I saw certain bands live. Eventually I would bring the camera to every concert I went to, but I was never thinking of trying to "get the shot", I was just shooting to document the experience.
During my senior year in high school I got a bigger, better camera and took a photography class. I really liked the process of developing film, but once school ended I didn't touch that camera again for years.
Due to feeling like I neglected my camera I picked it back up again and started to experiment with shooting landscapes and just random abstract stuff.
Right around this time is when digital was starting to take over and by that time I was fully obsessed with the camera again. I went digital, starting shooting photos of friends, and it slowly started to develop into what I do now.
What particular challenges do you face with erotic photography as opposed to other genres?
For me, Erotic Photography has a very fine line between being art or just being cheap, smutty, photos.
So I'm always trying to make sure the photos don't look too much like someone just shooting random photos of a naked girl, because anyone can do that. It has to have a bit of art to it. If I don't feel like I'm achieving that then I'll stop and try to think of a different way to do the shoot.
Do you prefer to shoot with film or digital?
Digital. The results are faster, the photos are cleaner, and you have so much control of everything going into the shot.
How did you become interested in fetish/BDSM?
Well besides being a huge metal head I also love industrial music. In Arizona the industrial, goth, and fetish scene all go hand in hand. So there were/are events that happen out here every couple of months that involve industrial/electro bands performing while fetish themed things are happening in other rooms. So that was my introduction.
Eventually I started to fade away from all that when the events got flooded with people that were just there to be seen in the scene and it started to lose a certain element to it.
But within the last year I really started to get back into it again due to my girlfriend, Encina Severa, being a huge fan/supporter/and performer at a lot of other fetish events.
Through her we have discovered much more "underground" fetish parties/events. Some of which actually require memberships.
Due to these being a little bit more hardcore I've definitely become more interested in it again.
Do you enjoy fetishism/BDSM play in your personal life, and if so what are you into?
To tell you the truth I'm pretty "vanilla" when it comes to all of this. I enjoy watching other people do it to each other, but that's about it. I'm not a voyeuristic spectator, I just find it interesting and entertaining. But if it begins with an "L" I'm usually a fan of it: Licking, Lube, Lotion, Leather, and Latex make for a good party. And we all know that two people isn't considered a party. The More The Merrier!
Do you think pinup and fetish are becoming part of the mainstream culture?
Definitely. When you have people like Willow Smith wearing Mother Of London knockoff outfits, Rihanna performing in her latex outfits for her song "S&M", and Dita Von Teese being a guest on multiple different shows it definitely goes to show that the fashion and interest in fetish and pin-up is starting to come to the surface.
Are there any other creative mediums you work in?
I used to play drums for 8 years, but that has been severely pushed aside due to photography.
Eventually I'd like to get into video a little bit more. That's something I plan on pursuing more within this year.
What kind of music do you like?
As I mentioned before I'm a huge metal head: Devin Townsend, Acid Bath, Machine Head, Hypocrisy, Dimmu Borgir, The Dillinger Escape Plan, All Shall Perish, Polkadot Cadaver, Monstrosity, The Black Dahlia Murder, just to name a few.
But the older I get the more I really enjoy chill stuff, whether it's female singers, rock bands, or atmospheric stuff like soundtracks: Imogen Heap, Florence And The Machine, Muse, Dredg, Explosions In The Sky, Ulver, Clint Mansell, John Murphy, etc.
What do you like to do for fun?
Concerts and Movies are my quick and easy pleasures, but I'm an adrenaline junkie so I always wanna do something a little bit more extreme.
I've gone Skydiving, Hang Gliding, Paragliding, Parasailing, Canyoning, Canyon Swinging, Cliff Jumping, Glacier Climbing, White Water Rafting, Zip lining, and Cage Diving with Sharks. I recommend all of those... some of them more than once.
I also love to travel, and that's always on my mind. I've been to 15 different countries and I plan on adding 2 more to that list this summer. I love to experience different ways of life, cultures, languages, and food. I believe international travel is something everyone should do. It opens your eyes to so much more.
