What inspired you to pick up a camera?
I worked as a graphic designer and photo retoucher for years before deciding to pick up a camera. I wanted a creative outlet to turn my own ideas into reality. I fell in love with the pin-up style and portraits of Hollywood starlet of the past and wanted to give moderns girls the chance to experience that.
What particular challenges do you face with Pinup photography as opposed to other genres?
You can't just decide to shoot pin-up one day. You really have to invest time studying poses, hair and makeup styles, clothing, sets and all things period appropriate.
Do you prefer to shoot with film or digital?
I shoot exclusively in digital.
How did you become interested in Pinup style?
I honestly can't remember any specific moment that made me fall in love with pin-up style. It's just seems so much more elegant and beautiful than a lot of other styles through the ages. What's not to love about that?
Do you think pinup and fetish are becoming part of the mainstream culture?
Yes and no. I definitely think there is a retro trend in motion now, largely due to hit shows like Mad Men and celebrities like Christina Aguilera and Katy Perry who shine a spotlight on this era. Like all trends, they will fade in time and people will move on to the next. But I love to see girls trying pin-up styles and incorporating retro elements into everyday wear. It's WAY better than when the 80's were making a comeback...
Are there any other creative mediums you work in?
I love to design and embellish corsets and costumes along with Sew She Said (she's the master seamstress) for our boutique next door to the the studio. I have always loved fashion and costumes!
What kind of music do you like?
I like lots of music, from 60's pop to Lady Gaga, but I have to admit I'm mostly stuck in the 90's when it comes to music.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love to sing and dance my heart out at our local theater! Some of my favorite shows I have been in are Beauty and the Beast, The Drowsy Chaperone, Cats and The Producers. You can see some of my shenanigans at http://www.youtube.com/erinshephard
