What inspired you to pick up a camera?
I got my first camera as a present before going to summer camp in the 5th grade. A black plastic 35mm, with a thumb wheel advance that cranked loudly. I was immediately captivated by the ability to record events and carried a camera since.
What particular challenges do you face with Erotic photography as opposed to other genres?
The biggest challenge to master as a man is focus on photography. A beginning photographer gets overwhelmed with the excitement of having a naked girl in front of him, all critical thinking clouds, and the photos come out like snapshots. Having a solid image or concept in mind before the shoot always helps me to stay focused. It ends up being a much more enjoyable experience, because now I can enjoy having a naked girl in front of me and also enjoy being an artist at the same time.
Do you prefer to shoot with film or digital?
Film is preferable because it forces you to be a photographer. Large format 4x5 shooting is one of the most wonderful arts I have ever taken part in. Dark room work is also wonderful, but the luxury consumes tenfold the production time I have for digital. As such, I have not shot film since school.
What kind of shoots would you like to work on in the future?
Jewelry is a genre I touched on a few years back and I would like to perfect the art and gain some advertising clientele.
What advice would you have for anyone just starting out in the industry?
Keep learning and teaching yourself new concepts and old standards, practice what you learn every day. Make a concise plan for yourself, and continually expand it. Just keep going in the direction you want, no matter what.
Are there any other creative mediums you work in?
I’ve been experimenting with video production for the past few years and I’m just now starting to really work on the craft and turn it into something real. This will eventually make up at least half of my art since it really captures the way of a girl more than a still, to show her movement, sound, personality is a great thing.
What kind of music do you like?
I listen to a lot of trance and electronic music, Armin Van Buuren creates a great mix every week on astateoftrance.com
What do you like to do for fun?
I live the life I created. In the morning I sit drinking mint tea on the balcony overlooking the foreign city I have traveled to (Budapest currently). Then I spend a couple hours attending to business matters, networking, marketing, updating my sites, etc. I go out for lunch in the city for a full European two hours, enjoying the local cuisine, beer, and walking around historic buildings. During lunch I meet with a pretty young girl who barely speaks English. We travel though the city like tourists taking pictures, getting gelato, stopping for crepes or kebab. Returning to my apartment I continue to take pictures of her while she undresses in the window. She shows me the different outfits and lingerie she brought, and I choose my favorites. We shoot for hours into the sunset having fun, laughing, taking breaks for snacks and wine. Looking back through the images I choose the best images and show her what we created, then off to dinner at a small local restaurant she knows well. Helping me with my menu I sample new dishes and drinks I never knew existed. After dinner it’s time to check out the local bar scene that can only be found by a local. Enjoying drunken songs in foreign languages, strange cocktails in funny glasses, and flavorful beers. Midnight passes and she drags me down the street to the nearest club. With throbbing bass, darting lasers, and lots of alcohol we dance until the sun comes up, then stumble back to sleep in.
This is the world I created, my own personal Afterlife.
