The Photography Of Jazzmin
The Photography Of Jazzmin
by Cary
My name is Jazzmin. I am photographer based in Los Angeles, California. I have been photographing for a little over 3 years. In various social networking sites, I go by the name Scarecrobot... You can also find my work under the name JaW Images. I say the word "uber" a lot.
What inspired you to pick up a camera?
My Father inspired me to pick up a camera. My dad did photography and, ever since I was a kid, he was always buying me cameras and encouraging me to take photos. As I got older, he gave me first SLR and pushed me to practice... When he passed, I gave it up for awhile, but realized he wouldn't want me to do that. (After all, what parent would?) So, I picked up my camera and started shooting again, and I've been working toward making it a career ever since.
What particular challenges do you face with erotic photography as opposed to other genres?
My biggest challenge, personally, with erotic photography is trying to find a way to make it artistic... I like to incorporate themes, characters, and/or concepts in all of my photography, and this especially includes erotic work.
Do you prefer to shoot with film or digital?
Ultimately, I prefer film... I LOVE the gritty, dramatic look of natural film grain and contrasting colors. I do shoot with digital though...because it's cost effective, as well as time efficient (which definitely comes in handy when you have 2-3 shoots per week). I still have my 35mm SLR though! I have it reserved for when I want to do experimental stuff.
How did you become interested in fetish/BDSM?
I was always interested into Fetish/BDSM... I started going to Fetish events with a close friend though back in 2008 and, since then, I've been utterly fascinated by the art of it...as well as obsessed with catching it on camera. One of the aspects of BDSM that I admire is people's ability to really let go of themselves and give up control...especially since I'm not the type to easily do so.
Do you enjoy fetishism/BDSM play in your personal life, and if so what are you into?
I enjoy a bit of fetish play in my personal life, but not too much...mainly because the guy I'm seeing, I haven't been seeing for very long. I will say though, that there's been a good deal of spanking in our encounters.
Do you think pinup and fetish are becoming part of the mainstream culture?
Pin-Up definitely is... The influence is in fashion, movies, etc. I think fetish is still a bit underground, or...at least not as mainstream as Pin-Up. Fetish is still kinda treated like a dirty word amongst the mainstream...which is probably a good thing. I mean, damn. Somethings gotta stay sacred.
Are there any other creative mediums you work in?
I do a lot of costume and prop-making. I've been making costumes for the past couple of years and have styled most of my own shoots. I also do some Graphic Design and can paint (acrylics & water color) pretty well.
What kind of music do you like?
My favorite kind of music is Industrial and Metal. Some of my favorite music artists are Combichrist, Hanzel und Gretyl, Finntroll, Das Ich, Angelspit, Lords of Acid, Alice In Chains, Strapping Young Lad, etc. I also like more dark, experimental music, like that of Switchblade Symphony and Massive Attack.
It's not all death & darkness for me though (lol)... When I'm in the mood, I listen to artists like LMFAO, Roisin Murphy, and Benny Bennassi. If I'm feeling nostalgic, I'll even listen The Spice Girls...and Show Tunes.
What do you like to do for fun?
I watch movies...a lot. I love Musicals...and SciFi movies! Anything with robots and awesome creature F/X automatically makes it to my "Favorites" list. I do a lot of arts-n-crafts, too. And on the rare occasion I feel up to it, I go clubbing or catch an Industrial show when it's an artist I like.
I am also the Moderator/Organizer for a Photography group on meetup.com called Alt+3rR0r LA. I organize fun, edgy themed photo shoots for the members of my group for the purpose of networking and portfolio building. It's a really fun and awesome group with a lot of talented photographers, models, etc. and we always have fun at our shoots.
