Interview With Peekaboo Pointe by Cary Peekaboo Pointe: Next time I take my hands off my eyes she's who I want to see. Classic Burlesque has become a huge phenomena lately, what about it first captured your interest? I first found out about classic burlesque in College when I was doing research for a paper for my Dance History class. I thought it was so glamorous and had such a rich and fascinating history. When I moved to NYC a year later I was shocked and so excited to see that there were people bringing it back!
What kind of performance do you put on?
I perform all types of different acts. Over the past 6 years my work has evolved and I have tried all types of acts out. Right now I am really interested in the more classic side of Burlesque with big sparely costumes and the more traditional movements but adding a little of my own flare to them, updating them for a modern audience. Every act I do is a little different. I have done a little comedy, a seriously sad act, a really filthy act, I like to explore all of the options in performance. There is no limit!
At what kind of events do you perform? I have done all kinds of events. From small downtown clubs, to corporate events, I have toured all over the country headlining a series of events for Dos Equis, I performed in Venice Italy for an MTV Italy party, I toured with the band Los Straightjackets and my cousins the Pontani Sisters all over Spain, I have even performed on a celebrity's (who will remain nameless) private yacht. If there's a spot with Burlesque in the city then you can be almost certain that I have performed there!
What's it like performing all over and experiencing the different scenes? It's really exciting! I love seeing what other performers are doing. It's so inspiring. And one of the great things about traveling and burlesque is that people in burlesque are some of the warmest and most welcoming people out there. So, no matter where I go I feel welcome!
Where is your favorite place to perform? Right now my favorite place to perform is Corio. It's been kind of like my second home for the past year and a half. I am a part of the house show there "This is Burlesque" and we do a show every Thurs-Saturday. It's a really cozy room and I have a great time doing the show there.
Has anything crazy ever happened at a show? Of Course!!
Are there any other creative mediums you work in? Not really, I have been dancing all my life so dance is really it. I have enjoyed making my own costumes and pasties. Learning to sew and be crafty was something I never thought that I would be interested in.
What are your favorite types of outfits to perform in? Really sparely ones! I love all my costumes, and they're all a little different.
What are your least favorites? The one's that make me look fat.
What kind of music do you like? I love all types of music. But I would be really hard pressed to name what exactly. I don't have an ipod, and I just bought a cd player last week after not having one for a few years. I have an old record player that I love and an obsession with one dollar records.
What do you like to do for fun? I like to cook, listen to NPR (radio lab is my favorite!), go out with my friends, plan new burlesque acts...you know the simple pleasures. I also love the show I do every weekend... "This is Burlesque" at Corio in Soho. West Broadway and Grand St. NYC Friday's at 8pm and Saturday's at 7:30 and 9:30pm.
