Interview With Orchid Mei

Denver’s primer burlesque artiste and winner of “Most Beautiful” at the 2007 Boston Burlesque Exposition, Orchid is featured in Jane Briggeman’s second book dedicated to the legends of burlesque; “BURLESQUE: A Living History” and has done shows for Cointreau, Mumm, and the Dresden Dolls. She has left audiences agape internationally, from coast to coast, and back up a mile high.

How did you become interested in fetish/BDSM?

It was more of a process than an instance.

Are there any fetishes that you don't find appealing?

I don't really understand blood play, bone breaking, coprophilia.

What excites you about fetish modeling?

Showing the beauty of something that isn't necessarily considered "beautiful" by a mainstream audience.

Classic pinup has become a huge phenomena lately, what about it first captured your interest?

Who doesn't want to be a pinup?

What is it that excites you about pinup modeling?

Like burlesque, it's a tease and I love that. It's flirty, fun, and sexy.

What are your favorite types of outfits to model in?

I like things that make me feel good, that compliment my love of glamour. I believe that if I feel confident, it makes the job a lot easier for the photographer.

Do you think pinup and fetish are becoming part of the mainstream culture?

I feel that they always have been, we just haven't spoken about them. It was a no-no. I think that it's becoming more acceptable and that makes it mainstream.

What kind of music do you like?

I have a very eclectic taste in music. Mostly, if it moves me in some way, strikes some kind of chord, I'm hooked.

What do you like to do for fun?

I am a burlesque performer first and foremost. Everything else is for fun! I perform regularly in Denver, Colorado at Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret and try to get to as may events and cities as I can.
