Justice Howard Motor Girls Calendar Spotlight

by Cary

We were lucky enough to get world class photographer Justice Howard to return and discus her work on the Motorgirls Calendar in depth.

How did you come to be involved with the Motorgirls Calendar?

It was a brainstorm between my pal Kim who runs Motorcult. A last minute idea actually . We put it together in 4 days I think it was. I had to pick the shots and out of 100,000 photos that ain't easy! So it was a rokkin fast and busy 4 day period. We went back and forth on a lot of them and then we had Kim's hubby Jay as our "man brain" which was nice to have a male perspective on some of the girls. Id joke around that it was a "girls club "calendar with Kim and I at the helm but the truth is it was great to have Jay's male perspective on how some of the shots worked on the male psyche.

What is it like collaborating with them?

Kim is the best and she is very good at doing great graphics. The calendar itself is hell tight on the graphics end, and she did all of that. The color is great, its on great stock that doesn't fingerprint up like some glossy paper stock, it really couldn't be more wonderful. Each month is really tight. Our parameters for this project were "could we look at that shot for an entire month" and when every shot was a yes to that we had our winners.

How were the models selected?

Well most of the girls were from my DIVA DOLLS shots from throughout this last year. A lot of the DIVA DOLLS we shot at car clubs etc that had a lot of bikes and cars and so I was able to pull a lot of those shots for the Motorgirls project. Some of them too were just from fun shoots I had done. Mia Tyler I shot a week before the calendar was put to bed so she made it in by a squeak. But yah, most all of them were from the DIVA DOLLS photo shots. It was really hard picking out 12 shots from all of the great stuff I have though.

How was each model paired up with a vehicle and scenario?

That was all done in the styling by me. Not only do I shoot everything but I style it as well. I actually style it BEFORE I shoot it. The cover model which is Frechy La Femme's shot and her calendar month was styled after that famous Brigitte Bardot chopper poster so it has that kind of a vibe. For Dejahs hot I just happened to get a bike from my pal Jose and this bike was smokin hott so that shot was as good as it was I think because the bike was so tight .That and we got her to hold the air cleaner like a penis, ha ha!

How was each photo matched with a particular month?

Well, a couple of the girls asked for a certain month.like Josi wanted July so I did my best to make that happen and Dejah has this crazy purple dark tattoo so she ended up being Halloween month October. The rest of it was pretty much Kim's call.

Is the process of shooting for a calendar any different than photographs for other uses?

OYes it is because each month has to be INCREDIBLEY TIGHT. You have to look at a calendar page for an entire month, well Motorgirls is 13 months, so for 13 months you're looking at each photo for an entire month straight. You don't want to get bored of the shot or tired of it where you want to go to the next month before its over.. You want the photo to hold your interest for the whole 30 day month. Thats hard to do. And to get photos to accomplish that is hard to do. Plus with calendars theres a short lived time span for selling them. Its not like something you can sell all year long.

Can we expect any similar projects between both parties in the future?

Of course. Kim and I will be working on our new project the CHOPPER DOLLS calendar for next year. We will let you know when it hits. The calendar can be ordered through www.motorcult.com
