Interview With Leanne Sutherland

by Cary

Leanne Sutherland is a Fetish Photographer and model, tremendously talented on either side of the camera.

What inspired you to pick up a camera?

I'd been taking pictures since I was a kid and always seemed to have a bit of a knack and my grandad always encouraged me with anything creative that I wanted to do, however I ignored it for a long time and did loads of other stuff like business studies, law, psychology, sound engineering and Japanese. I got roped into taking pictures for bands as my jobs meant I was surrounded by them and thats when I started to take it seriously. I'm never bored when I've got a camera in my hand. Ive also recently had a very impressive photographer interested in my work so maybe next time you interview me I'll have a lot more to say, and a lot more for you to see.

What particular challenges do you face with erotic photography as opposed to other genres?

Well its a subject Ive been interested in for a long time and Ive only recently managed to get my foot in the door, its a tough door to open, but once you get that one shoot that makes the models go "thats pretty good I'd like to model for her" it starts to get easier, photography isn't built on qualifications its built on reputation, my lecturer told me that when I dropped out, he was my biggest fan to date.

Other challenges are of course the ever offended general public its hard to get your work out when so many people don't want to see it, no matter how creative. I don't know what its like across your side of the pond but the government here are trying to pass a law banning all fetish/erotic photography if the models don't look like they are enjoying themselves. how pathetic is that! So fairly soon you could see a new genre of chipper torture photos coming from the UK lol.

Do you prefer to shoot with film or digital?

I get a lot more satisfaction from film because its so much harder, it doesn't allow for mistakes so your set up has to be perfect. Plus you get all the fun of traditional processing/developing. I have to say digital is my favorite for commissioned work or work on a time limit because you can view what images you are producing and correct them as you need to, and anything you missed or things that need enhancing post processing can be done with editing software, something that I'm very much addicted to.

You also model, do you find your work on one side of the camera influences your work on the other?

Definitely! It gives me a great insight into photography etiquette, and how to direct models to get the best from them, and you pick up lots of inspiration from fellow photographers along the way. Thats not the reason I do it though, its just a bit of fun.

What excites you about fetish modeling?

Its seems to me to be the most diverse interesting work, Its fun to act out these socially unaccepted scenarios and fantasies, much better than the pouty straight laced commercial images all based around one perfect idea and precision set up. fetish in my experience tends to be more "heres the props, lets see what happens".

What are your favorite types of outfits to model in?

I love the burlesque and showgirl type costumes, the glamorous and the vintage. but I'm not really bothered as long as they don't look like cheap crap. My favourite item I own is a pair of rubber braces.

Do you think pinup and fetish are becoming part of the mainstream culture?

Its tough to say, I think a lot more people know about it now, theres a lot more books being published, burlesque is certainly popular right now, and "alt pinup" sites are popping up everywhere, so its more accepted than it was a few years ago but I don't think its going to become mainstream in my lifetime.

What kind of music do you like?

My music taste is quite diverse, I love punk, ska, big band/swing, hardcore, and various other styles as well as a tendency towards obscure 80s/90s UK grunge and indie bands.

What do you like to do for fun?

If I ever get spare time I try and practice my bass playing, or go back to my hometown to watch some free gigs and see my friends. other than that I do an array of nerdy things like playing flash games on the net, and revising my Japanese, I've recently started browsing antiques and collectibles guides (its work related a bit).
