Interview With Kit Cat by Cary Kit Cat: Burlesque Performer as sweet as the similarly named candy bar. Classic Burlesque has become a huge phenomena lately, what about it first captured your interest? Well as I child I was mesmerized by Catwoman, Julie Newmar specifically and Old Hollywood. I adore the pageantry of musicals, how one can escape into a fantasy world for just a few moments. I started going to burlesque shows about 7 years ago and saw the inside of my brain on a stage. The combination of dance, story-telling, positive sensuality, glamour and comedy too, it was a match made in heaven!
What kind of performance do you put on? I'm more interested in the fantasy element of showing a particular character and telling a story rather than performing what's often called a "straight strip." At first the classic burlesque that is reminiscent of the 1940-1950's is what often draws people into burlesque, but it can become very generic and surprisingly boring very quickly when it's not done perfectly There are much better fan dancers and glamour girls out than than me so I prefer to walk the line between the universal and otherworldly. So on stage my acts range from peeling out of a banana, giving birth to kittens and am being a a box of chocolates.
At what kind of events do you perform? Everything from regular burlesque shows, bars, nightclubs, theater events, private parties.
What's it like performing all over and experiencing the different scenes? I love meeting people and experiencing things I've never felt before, it makes life so exciting. I think once you get a taste of performing whether it be burlesque, being in a band or acting, it's in your blood forever.
Where is your favorite place to perform? Coney Island Sideshow!
Has anything crazy ever happened at a show? Someone wanted to call PETA because my kitten prop was a bit too realistic from where they were sitting!
Are there any other creative mediums you work in? I'm also an actress and have filmed a bunch of random thing this past year such as being on Gossip Girl, I go-go danced on the CW 11 Morning News and am currently working on a horror film.
What are your favorite types of outfits to perform in? Outrageous, over-the-top, I lean towards the bizarre, so a perfectly glamorous girl, who reveals a bleeding heart is what stops me in my tracks. Surprise me!
What kind of music do you like? Music that gives me body an immediate urgent shock of emotion so it depends on the mood. I listen to everything from Roy Orbison to Death in June to Strawberry Switchblade to Milton Nascimento to Billie Holiday oooh this could get long..
What do you like to do for fun? Making perfect mix tapes is still a favorite ambition. When I can I go to New Orleans, my favorite city so far! I love cooking and having house guests, going to the ocean and swimming like a mermaid for hours.
