Interview With Judy Luck

by Cary

We are very lucky indeed to bring you Judy Luck! :)

Classic Burlesque has become a huge phenomena lately, what about it first captured your interest?

Well I’m trained in ballet and jazz already and when I came out of high school I was searching for anywhere I could perform. I had seen classic Burlesque pictures, some performances in old films, and one day happened to come across someone with “Burlesque Performer” in their job title on MySpace. I became very curious and started doing searches and soon came up with tons of performers, men and women. The costumes, the acts, the classic beauties… it was all heaven to me that these people had brought it back and I knew somehow I had to jump into that world as well.

What kind of performance do you put on?

Well you must understand its been awhile sense I’ve been in the spotlight in that way due to side projects as well as school… however I have classic acts with jazzy songs and my rocker side comes out in more modern songs/acts as well. Anything I can show off my dance background or cutesy/flirtatious side makes me happy to perform.

At what kind of events do you perform?

For awhile I performed with Bobbie Burlesque, Lulu Lunaris, and the “gang” as I like to refer to them at small venues in the Los Angeles area. For my 21st birthday (last year) I also put on my first show that raised money for various charities: B.A.C.A., Epilepsy Foundation of Los Angeles, Pin-Up Angeles, and Gibbons Foundation.

Where is your favorite place to perform?

So far…. The whiskey was fun because it had plenty of room to perform on the stage, a good dressing room for our group, and fit a good sized audience comfortably. It’s also nostalgic for me because it’s where I performed solo for the first time.

Has anything crazy ever happened at a show?

My birthday was a bit dramatic mostly because I was running around so much and didn’t get to watch much of the show. During my performance my large prop fell behind me, but luckily I didn’t notice until half the act was over, I just stepped over it. Other than that, drunken audience members are always fun to deal with. You just got to play the game though and shout back funny comments and have fun with them, after all they are there to have a good time and support us… drunk or sober.

What do you think about pinup becoming part of the mainstream culture?

I think it’s great, I mean if it wasn’t for that I probably wouldn’t be doing this interview now. I wasn’t always involved with this scene. I loved it and admired those in it but always felt too awkward to be “pretty” and involved in any way. When I got older and experimented in makeup and hair and felt more comfortable I jumped in bringing any knowledge of movies, cars, music, and style I had. I’ve certainly learned more now and add to that daily by meeting new people and going to more events. I also really love seeing what pin-up names are created by girls, it says so much about a person.

What is it that excites you about pinup modeling?

Creativity that is involved in the shoots, and naturally the beautiful vintage reproductions we are creating. The fact I can smile and be silly and I don’t need to keep a straight mouth or haunch over my shoulders (even though I do have one of these photos), makes me happy to be apart of the pin-up world. Let me not forget however the amazing people I have met during the process, models, photographers, and designers, everyone that has added to anything I have done.

Are there any other creative mediums you work in?

I’m a dancer, which really allows me to let my creativity out. I love to choreograph dances, even if it’s for no reason at all. I did this from a young age and some of my friends can vogue for the fact I put them through a minI boot camp learning them, just because I wanted to share it with them that bad.

What kind of music do you like?

Hahahaha this is always a fun question for me to answer because unless you’re a friend or “fan” most are often surprised by my response. Well I love love love Frank Sinatra, I could listen to him all day, night, week, month, year, life long, ha-ha. But then there’s quite the opposite… I also love Bon JovI and Def Leppard just as much, and I’m not ashamed at all to admit that! I go from swing, jazz, rockabilly, to rock ‘n roll, classic rock, metal, and yes even rap… I like everything. But Frank and Jon Bon certainly are at the top for me… always have been, and always will be.

What do you like to do for fun?

Going to Disneyland, dancing, attending local shows (Old Man Markley shows are the best of course!), going to dive bars with my friends, day trips to some new location I’ve never been to. One of my friends and I have a book we recently purchased that we pick a place we’ve never been to out of it and try it… it’s been a lot of fun. Most of all though being with my friends and family make anything instantly fun because I don’t always get to see them as much as I would like.

Where can we see you next?

Well I am in works with Viva Los Angeles Productions, to perform at Trader Vic’s this summer, however the date are not known yet. August 29th I will be performing with some of my very best friends and performers at M. Bar for Bobbie Burlesque’s Fantasy show. The summer will be busy for me, I have various company shoots coming up, one for charity actually as well, two websites, and booking more and more burlesque shows everyday. So watch for updates on twitter and myspace. =)
