Interview With Jinx

by Cary

In addition to fetish modeling, Jinx transforms the hula hoop from quaint toy of yesteryear to sexy burlesque performance medium.

How did you discover the hula hoop?

A friend of mine, Genevieve Boisseau, taught me how. Actually she kind of roped me in to it (not literally). She had approached me about performing in an all girl show of sorts, mainly showcasing our strengths such as singing, or dancing, or monologues, etc. I am one of the Worst actors to ever live so naturally I shy away from the stage. I politely declined but offered to help out in other ways. So she had me choreograph a dance number. I don't have any formal dance training, but I'm surrounded by amazing dancers and try to absorb as much as I can by watching and practicing. I ended up choreographing a dance number to the Andrew Sisters, which was a lot fun. I already knew the steps, so they asked me to join in. I was ok with being on stage and not having to talk. Since she had me in the show now, she asked for me to do a solo number. I could do that too. Lol, then she had the great idea for me to learn how to hoop in 3 months and do a performance with her. Sure, why not?

My 1st hooping performance, I was so nervous that I ended up losing my hold on it and it went flying to the back of the stage. Thankfully it didn't go hurtling into the audience, heh. I smiled at the crowd, gathered up my hoop, and continued on with the show. Despite the foul up, I had an amazing time. We realized we enjoyed practicing together and decided we wanted to stay together and perform as a team. We called ourselves Deva Hoop Dasi and performed at many clubs in the RI and MA area as well as WaterFire in Providence.

She has since moved to LA to pursue her acting career and I've continued on as a solo act.

What is it like when you perform in front of a crowd with it?

I normally get Very nervous before a performance. I still have a bit of stage fright, despite how I look or act outwardly. But once I start....I feel the music and just go with it. Dancing and hooping are one of the few times I feel truly happy and free. I can express and just lose myself in the music.

My favorite part about performing is after the show. Getting to talk to people and then letting them try my hoops. I absolutely love teaching. The look people get on their faces when they finally get it is priceless. I'm hoping to start my own classes in RI soon.

How did you become interested in fetish/BDSM?

I did a lot of searching on who I was while growing up. I wasn't exactly one of the cool kids, I was more one of the many that got picked on everyday. I didn't really start to find myself until after college. I went through just about every phase, every scene, trying to figure out where I fit in. Then I was introduced to the goth/fetish/industrial scene and I felt....comfortable. People were so accepting and encouraging, that I started to stop caring what people thought of me. They liked me for who I was and didn't have anything to prove. It felt like home. I have since grown into my own and don't like to pigeonhole myself into just one scene or genre. I like many different scenes now and appreciate them all for what they can offer.

Do you enjoy fetishism/BDSM play in your personal life, and if so what are you into?

*grin* I most certainly do. Pretty much anything that is restraining or dominating, hair pulling, scratching, etc. I miss the days where it looked like a bloody road map on my back. I like the lack of control. It's hard to find the right partner for that sort of thing though. There has to be a certain level of connection and trust. I've been with a couple of people that were amazing but they are few.

Are there any fetishes that you don't find appealing?

There are definitely fetishes I don't find appealing or understand. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them, they're just not for me. To each their own. :) Whatever gets you off, right? As long as it's legal.

What excites you about fetish modeling?

What girl Doesn't like dressing up and feeling pretty? I like stepping out of my everyday clothes and putting on something attractive. I honestly do it more for me than anything else. I love being able to look at a picture of me and think to myself, I clean up nice. It gives me more confidence and I feel good about myself. Yeah-I'm also slightly narcissistic, I'm aware.

What are your favorite types of outfits to model in?

I'm a Huge advocate of dressing your size. I don't have a perfect body, who does? So I try and stick with clothes that are flattering to me. I prefer things that are classy, elegant, but with an edge. I make some of my own clothes so I always love a chance to show those off.

What are your least favorites?

I'm not a huge fan of things that are too tight. I Hate showing my stomach. Anything that's overly kitschy or slutty. I don't want to look like I sell myself.

Do you think pinup and fetish are becoming part of the mainstream culture?

I most certainly do. I've seen so many shirts that look like corsets but aren't really, a ridiculous amount of times. I think of that style as fetish light. For the people that want to maybe flirt with the fringes of that society but not actually step in. And if that makes them happy, all the more power to them.

What kind of music do you like?

I love anything I can dance to. (bear with me as I'm awful at categorizing music) Electronic, reggaeton, 80's, oldies, goth, industrial, r&b, hip-hop, rock, pop, top 40's. Just about everything. I'm not too picky. I like to think I have an equal balance of awesome and awful taste in music =D

What do you like to do for fun?

I try not to take myself too seriously, I prefer to just be silly and ridiculous as often as I can. My friends are my family and I like to spend as much time as possible with them. I love going out, dancing, drinking. I'm not a huge fan of going to bars as I'm not great with conversation. Me and words aren't exactly best friends. I'm insatiable with books. I still have books from my tween years that I will still reread to this day. Since I don't have the best of memories it's almost like reading it for the 1st time. Low key days full of tv shows on dvd and movies and cuddling with my cat. Going to the beach, in any weather, as often as I can. Designing and making clothes with friends. Hiking, camping, riding, anything outdoors. And of course hooping and modeling.
