Interview With Jade Noir

by Cary

I can't think of anyone with a more appropriate nom de plume than Jade Noir, she really brings that Film Noir look and feel to Fetish Photography.

What inspired you to pick up a camera?

I've always loved fashion and boudoir photography and was inspired by the works of Ellen Von Unwerth and Helmut Newton. When I had gotten my first digital camera, I just played around with it taking photos of some landscapes and did A LOT of self-portraits that I would get really creative with. Then that's when I figured why not use that creative energy into taking photos of someone else. So I decided to ask one of my girlfriends if she'd pose for me and she said yes. So I did my first shoot with her and got some really great feedback. Then things just pretty much took off from there.

What particular challenges do you face with erotic photography as opposed to other genres?

I actually haven't faced any challenges with it yet and I'm guessing it's due to the fact that I'm a female photographer. I've noticed how women are pretty comfortable with being half naked in front of me.

Do you prefer to shoot with film or digital?

I shoot strictly digital. I don't know much about film at all, but I'd love to learn it. I have a great respect for photographers who shoot with film.

How did you become interested in fetish/BDSM?

I had been attracted to fetish fashion since I was a teenager. I've always had a thing for latex, leather and vinyl and I loved to wear it. But as I got older, I learned more about what the lifestyle is about rather than just the fashion. It intrigued me because we're all pretty much brought up to learn and know about the vanilla side of sex, and fetish is all about embracing and enjoying the different kinks that we are into that go beyond the "norm".

Do you think pinup and fetish are becoming part of the mainstream culture?

I think right now, mainstream culture is jumping more on retro and fetish fashion rather than the actual lifestyle.

Are there any other creative mediums you work in?

I love music. Before I started photography, I was very interested in making and producing music. I went to college and majored in Music Technology/Business. I had learned to play guitar, bass, and keyboard. I'm not GREAT at those instruments, but I can play a little something on each.

What kind of music do you like?

I like pretty much all types of music but I'm mainly into rock, metal, industrial and new wave.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love hanging out with my boyfriend, partying, and of course, making art!
