Interview With Hex Onyx
by Cary
How did you become interested in fetish/BDSM?
I have been thinking about this question all day and I really must say that I think my interest in fetish and BDSM was something that I was born with, much like my bisexuality. There was no moment where I was like, "I am going to like this because I want to" it was a more a "I think I might just be into this" after accidentally stumbling upon it in some seemingly botched sexual maneuver with one of my first lovers. The idea of both fetish and BDSM has always fascinated me, especially on a mental level.
Do you enjoy fetishism/BDSM play in your personal life, and if so what are you into?
I have been known to enjoy BDSM in my personal life, but it all depends on who I am with. You can't take any person and make them into the perfect partner. It takes a certain person for me to take them seriously enough to really let myself become engulfed in the play and fantasy. I remember I dated a man in New York who would tie me to his ceiling and floor and would tell me when I could cum. It was the hottest sex I had ever had in my life. Not only was it fulfilling physically, but it was also amazing on an intellectual and mental levels. However, I know I would never be able to replicate those experiences with anyone else. Some people are right for the BDSM lifestyle. Sometimes people try too hard though and I can sense when they are doing that and trying too hard is just one big turn off. It it's not a part of who you are at your core then you fail miserably.
Are there any fetishes that you don't find appealing?
Bestiality and furries. Basically anything involving animals. I try not to be judgmental, but I just can not wrap my head around those sorts of lifestyles. Also, I think bestiality is animal abuse at one of the highest levels and animal abuse makes me cry.
What excites you about fetish modeling?
I love modeling. I especially love fetish modeling because it allows me to truly express my quirky self. I also love the look of the clothing often featured in fetish sets. It seems too that good fetish photography is just really excellent art and I love being a part of any kind of artistic work.
What are your favorite types of outfits to model in?
Lately I have been in love with corsets and have even started making my own. They are so expensive that it just makes sense for me to make them myself!! I also love latex but that is something that is beyond my financial reach. Basically I love to model in anything edgy, black, and offbeat. I also love modeling in my old gripfast boots. I love wearing combat boots everywhere and like featuring them in photographs of me. Of course I like other kinds of shoes, but combat boots just suit me. Also, I feel like one bad ass chick when wearing them.
What are your least favorites?
Anything boring and trite really. I hate those vinyl stripper boots that everyone seems to love. They just seem to be done ad nauseum. I feel like shouting, "Give me something new!!" I also hate anything that looks like it could have been bought at the local Hot Topic, but that may be because I used to work there.
Do you think pinup and fetish are becoming part of the mainstream culture?
Yes and no. There are some websites out there that used to be more counter culture but have seemed to make conscious decisions to head in a mainstream direction. It's something I disagree with but they do what they think is best for their business. There is one website that I have modeled for that I am choosing to no longer participate in because of this conscious decision to favor a more mainstream 'cute sexy' soft look that I just do not have. I think the 'mainstream-ness' of fetish and BDSM ebbs and flows like the tide. Back in the nineties when NIN came out with The Downward Spiral and 'Closer' was a top ten hit was a time that fetish and BDSM came more into the light of mainstream culture. A few years later it retreated back into the dim light of being a sub culture and with that retreat many of the 'posers' were tossed from the scene as they all suddenly became fans of emo and indie rock. I think so much of BDSM and fetish ties into the industrial music and goth scenes and when these scenes are deemed 'unpopular' by the majority then fetish and BDSM go back underground.
Pin up on the other hand is not as 'hardcore' as fetish and BDSM so I feel that will always be a tad more popular in mainstream culture. It also has the ability to designate itself to be more art than porn, which seems to attract people who might otherwise be turned off by pornography.
What kind of music do you like?
I love the music of Skinny Puppy. In fact, I like industrial music in general, especially older industrial that contains a less polished sound. A lot of what is being passed off as industrial now is more a techno/industrial hybrid that I like but that is not as organic and honest as the music of bands like Skinny Puppy or Haujobb. I'm also into The Smiths, The Cure, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, New Order, etc. I also like a lot of old school punk like The Clash, The Dead Kennedy's, etc. I also love Sonic Youth. I majored in music studio composition in college so my tastes in music are as varied as there are insects on earth. I can pretty much appreciate anything that is well written and well played. I may not like it, but I can appreciate it.
What do you like to do for fun?
Lately I have been addicted to making corsets and designing my own clothes to model and go out in. Some nights my house sounds like the inside of a Malaysian sweatshop minus the ambient noise of the ten year old kids putting together pairs of jeans. It's just so hard to find good clothing these days that isn't grossly over priced. I just had to take things into my own hands. I also love to read. Lately I have been reading books on Buddhism. I also like to write poetry, contemplate life, and I spend way too much time perusing the internet.
