Interview With Dottie Lux by Cary Dottie Lux has gone from Burlesque Performer to Instructor, passing her secrets on to you. This is your second appearance in Fixe Magazine, what was the reaction the first time? I had so much fun being a part of the project the first go around and to be in such great company...it was an honor. Thanks for having me back.
How did you come to teach a Burlesque class? When I found burlesque, I found a new way of thinking that honored myself and celebrated things I thought were detriments about my physical appearance. I really wanted to give everyone--no matter what age, size, gender or color--the same opportunity to feel great and powerful. Burlesque is about dance and we go over that too, but it is also about artistry and having the confidence to convince an audience of your charisma, sex appeal and charm.
What do people learn in class? Every class is different and I'm adding new sessions all the time. From dance moves, story telling/character development, crafting and costume making, business tips, make-up and on and on. What's really fun about burlesque is that every performer has aspects they excel in; I love bringing in other teachers to share their expertise!
What kind of people take Burlesque class? All kinds! Especially in a town as diverse and kooky as San Francisco. Maybe even you?! I think there are so many different types of performers and performances, the classes easily lend them selves to all types of characters, albeit mostly women.
Would potential students need any prior experience? Not at all. Everything you would need to know is gone over in class. No experience needed at all, just a creative mind and an eagerness to have fun. Some people have the intention of performing on stage and others are just toying with the idea and some want to bring this sexiness home to their partner, all types of people are encouraged to take the classes.
What advice would you give to someone interested in getting started with Burlesque? Go to as many shows as you possibly can, see as much performance as you possibly can. Study what you see and become the best fan you could possibly be. That's the best way to start.
Do you prefer to spank or be spanked? Have you seen that movie? It's a great one... Dottie Gets Spanked. Todd Haynes is actually a huge inspiration for me. He pushes the envelope in film and loves The Carpenters.
What's your favorite vegetable? Is ice cream a vegetable? Probably not. How about candy corn?
Would you be interested in traveling to outer space? I think San Francisco is the closest I'm ever going to get. I'm really excited by the idea of traveling all over this planet, so I'm going to start with that.
What celebrity do you find most attractive? That's a hard one considering I tend to be attracted to roundness and curves and Hollywood tends to suck that out of so many people. Jennifer Coolidge is fabulous! I love her.
Who is your favorite cartoon character? I love so many of them. To choose one I would have to say Roger Rabbit. He's thuch a romantic (said with a lisp).
