Interview With Bernie Dexter
by Cary
Classic pinup has become a huge phenomena lately, what about it captures your interest?
It sure has & is so great! Not just because I have a modeling career now but because Rockabilly music & culture is
finally getting the attention it deserves. I always say Iam a real rockabilly girl and I have been interested in 1940s 1950s culture all my life.
& it is not just a trend for me it is a lifestyle. Posting pin ups on the net has been my contribution to the rockabilly scene.
What do you think about pinup and fetish becoming part of the mainstream culture?
I think it always has been part of the mainstream culture but a lot of people liked to take credit for something they were regurgitating.
A lot of designers over the years have made 1940s & 1950's reproduction & called it their design.
I do not think it is bad they did that but I think it is much cooler to admit that you are inspired by American Culture.
I think fetish & pin up really go hand in hand. It just depends on what your fetish is;) hehehe...
my first Bernie Dexter shoe design was inspired by bondage. I do not do bondage but it does have a certain
allure I find fascinating.
The first time i saw the black hair & bangs hair style was not on Bettie page, it was actually at the Rubber Ball in Hollywood in 1993.
I thought the hair style was so mysterious so i grew mine out & dyed it black . It has been that way since. I even used wigs till it was actually grown out! hehehe..
What is it that excites you about pinup modeling?
Pin up modeling is a form of self expression for me. I look at it more as an art form.
nothing is planned. we do everything free style & I like it that way.
I honestly was shocked & still am when we down load pix. I still can not believe it is me. So that is really fun!
What music first caught your ear and got you into Rockabilly?
I was taken to a Big Sandy show in 1994.
I really loved everything about it except the snobs. but it did not stop me. I immersed myself in everything 1950's! There were not a lot of Rockabilly bands around though I did get the paper every week & went to any & every show I could!
Then I discovered the Derby in Hollywood. I went 3 times a week! heehee... I Loved to dance so it was so fun to go after work & dance all night long.
One night I went to Jacks Sugar Shack on Hollywood & Vine & that was the first time I saw Levi Dexter play. It completely changed my world. It was like "THAT is what it is!" Flashy, desperate & wild. I was back on the rockabilly scene!
Do you enjoy fetishism/BDSM play in your personal life, and if so what are you into?
Yes I do, I like wearing Stockings, high heels , boots, & vintage lingerie.
my next lingerie collection will reflect a lot more of my personal private side.
I LOVE latex I just have not had a chance to model much of it.
I also love dress up costumes;) Levi enjoys the fact i like to wear all these things..... I have been collecting & wearing these things long before I was a model.
What advice would you give to someone who is new to the scene?
Best advise I can give is, it is not about networking.
1~ Be yourself, So many think my success is the haircut. or I am doing Bettie Page.
the truth is I am myself, & the more myself I am & true to myself I am the more success I have had.
2~ this goes along with # 1 but remember don't try to be another model. Everyone has their own unique beauty!
You do not have to have big boobs, big lips, or any extreme features, that is unless that is what you are into & there is nothing wrong with all that.
I have seen some models who have all that & I think they are AMAZZZING . just do not feel you HAVE to be them.
I just think being true to who you are is really the key to success. post those pix & see how people react!
3~ do not get involved in the drama.
4~ just have fun, don't take it all to seriously.
5~ Be professional!
6~Be professional!!
Are there any other creative mediums you work in?
Yes, I do not do burlesque live but we like to make fun little movie clips.
Levi & I plan to put out a Bernie Dexter DVD one day
