Interview With Ana Aesthtic by Cary Ana Aesthetic models Pinup and Comic Book Character Costumes, How can you not love that? :) How did you get interested in comic books? I started reading comic books at the wee age of 8. I don't know what prompted it, but I still have issues of Uncanny X-men, Wolverine, and Detective Comics from "back in the day." It's something that just stayed with me. As I got older and into middle and high school I branched out into more independent and alternative titles from Image and Slave Labor Graphics. I still stayed true to my X-Men and Batman titles, though. There's something about the writing and characterization in those books that is timeless and just a good story.
What was the progression that led to you dressing up as the characters? I think I've always enjoyed dressing up. I remember at age 12 wanting to be a "dominatrix" because I saw it on some trash-talk TV show and raiding my mom's closet for anything resembling leather. Then, I got into the whole goth scene and would dress up as something not from this century when I'd go out dancing (amazing what a fake ID and $20 could get you in Miami in the mid 90s!). My first actual "cosplay" was at an anime convention in 1999, I had ordered some costumes from my favorite series and dressed up as those characters. It wasn't enough, though, soon I started sewing my own and now I have a closet full of costumes!
Who is your favorite character to dress as? It's always a toss up between Harley Quinn from Batman and Dark Phoenix from X-Men. I love the bad gals, they're just so much fun to be! Harley is great, because when I dress up as her, I put on the whole act - the Arleen Sorkin voice, bouncing all over the walls. It's hard not to love being that character. You also do some pin up modeling, how do the two genres compare? I have to admit, I'm not a very good pin up. For a lot of my friends, it's a life style. For me, it's just another excuse to wear a pretty costume. I do enjoy taking traditional pin up poses and ideas and apply them to my costume modeling. I'm working on a series right now that will hopefully entice and amuse many people, and really bring the two genres together... for me any ways.
Do you find that these types of modeling cross over with the Fetish/BDSM scene? Certainly! I also do burlesque performing, and was invited as a guest performer at FetishCon in Tampa this past year. It's amazing how well me and my partner, Minnie Vicious, were received. We did a traditional burlesque routine with a comic book twist, and people adored it (or so they pretended to ;D). I have found that Fetish and Comics have taken an interesting turn together. There are several sites dedicated to bound women dressed in similar likeness to some of the more popular comic gals, and at Fetish Con this past year they had an actual contest with sexy super heroines judged by the comic master himself, George Perez!
Do you enjoy fetishism/BDSM play in your personal life, and if so what are you into? You know, it's pretty funny. I met my fiancé while I was running a fetish night and I roped him in to help with some of the A/V work; but we're probably the most vanilla couple out there. Certainly, I'm a bit of an exhibitionist (the costuming and modeling and all) and I often think if it wasn't for the "day job" I'd delve more into outright fetish modeling. As for Fetish and BDSM, it is something I enjoy aesthetically. I really admire girls like Vivian Ireene Pierce, Angela Ryan, Jezebel Tempting and Evelyn Rose and have been fans of theirs for years. Vivian is great, because she really blends the comic and fetishism sides together! I think if I ever found someone to fund my latex fetish, I would love to do latex costumes of my favorite super babes!
Do you think pinup and fetish are becoming part of the mainstream culture? I think they always have been. You have the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Bettie Page, and going the other way, Gypsy Rose Lee. These girls have been accepted, and adored, by mainstream society for decades. I think the mainstream is willing to accept some spanking and "whips and chains" as long as you have sexy girls attached to it. And deep down, who doesn't love a good spanking?!
What kind of music do you like? Oh my gosh! What don't I like? I used to work in radio and was exposed to a wide array of music. But you can guarantee that I will always tune in for some good rockabilly, classic crooners, goth/industrial, 80s and Bollywood music.
What do you like to do for fun? I love horseback riding and dancing. Also, a good glass of wine and close friends is a must have for a fun night. I'm also in the 2009 Geek Girls Charity Calendar. 12 of the hottest women this side of the comic pages have taken the time to make some lovely pinup pictures for a good cause! All proceeds go to BASE Camp, a charity organization that helps kids living with cancer.
